Bibb County Jail
November 14, 2009 Centreville, Alabama 7:00pm – 2:00am
HISTORY:
The old Bibb County Jail in Centreville is an ailing landmark looking for a cure. After the county constructed a new facility, the old jail was abandoned and without a new tenant. Storm damage, deferred maintenance and neglect have taken a great toll on the building. Demolition was considered but the old jail was spared when demolition bids came in too high. Mississippi architect, A.S. Hull, designed the old Bibb County Jail in 1910. Embellished with ornate architectural elements, the old jail visually compliments the nearby courthouse, a grand Renaissance Revival building also designed by Hull. The “Better Hometown Group”, a city coalition, is trying to purchase the old jail in hopes of turning it into a county museum. However, the city is willing to consider other plans that may adapt the building to a new use.
The Old Bibb County Jail
Built in 1910, the old jail has many stories to tell. It is a strong, sound building now owned by the Better Home Town Group. The Rock Building This building was built with native stone during the WPA era. On July 13, 1938, the Commissioners Court of Bibb County purchased a tract of land at a cost of $3,500 and erected this building at a cost of $38,500. This beautiful building was renovated in 1978. Currently the Rock Building houses the Bibb County Board of Education, the Bibb County Commission, and the Emergency Management Agency.
