Monroe County Courthouse

Home to the famous novelist Harper Lee, Monroeville, Alabama, is a charming town steeped in history. A prominent landmark in the town is the Monroe County Courthouse, famously featured in the great American classic, To Kill A Mockingbird. In early June 2023, the Tuscaloosa Paranormal Research Group conducted a paranormal investigation in the courthouse. Needless to say, it was an honor!

History

The building was constructed in 1903. The courthouse gained national fame when Harper Lee published her novel, To Kill a Mockingbird. Harper spent many of her childhood days in the courthouse as her father was a lawyer. It was like a second home to her, and it's even said that she would nap in the balcony during her father’s trials. Over the years, the town made efforts to restore and maintain the beautiful building. In 1991, it was turned into a museum.

Spirits of the Courthouse

There have been several reports of paranormal activity in the courthouse over the decades. The spirit of a judge is believed to haunt the courtroom, with phantom sounds of his gavel echoing through the halls. It is also speculated that the spirit of a man, wrongly accused of a crime, returns to the courthouse to plead his innocence.

Shadow figures have been regularly reported in the records room. It’s unknown whose spirit might be haunting the room, but whoever it may be, it has left many guests and employees hesitant to enter the area.

During our investigation, several investigators experienced unexplainable sounds that seemed to come out of nowhere, as well as mysterious shadows passing by doorways. We detected EMF (electromagnetic field) spikes on our equipment throughout the night, and mysterious footsteps were heard coming from the second floor.

Special thanks to the town of Monroeville for being so welcoming to our group! It was truly an honor for the courthouse to open its doors and allow us to conduct our investigation.
