Smith County Courthouse

History

Carthage, TN, was founded in 1804. The town has a rich history, including its role in the Civil War and its deep connections to Native American culture. Sitting prominently in the center of the town square is the old Smith County Courthouse, built between 1877 and 1879. This is the second courthouse to be constructed on the site. The property also has a grim history, having been the site of public hangings.

Spirits of the courthouse

The spirit of Fred, a 15 year old enslaved boy is believed to haunt the third floor.

The apparition of a lady in white has been seen on the staircase in the main lobby.

A man who used to put on community plays on the second floor died of a heart attack and is believed to still haunt the building.

EVIDENCE Captured by TPRG

Several unexplained sounds were heard during our investigation, including a disembodied squeal or whistle.

A potential EVP was captured on the third floor.
